Akshi Tarpanam is a delicate and gentle procedure performed by a trained therapist under the strict guidance of an Ayurvedic physician. The treatment typically lasts between 20 to 30 minutes.
Preparation: The patient lies comfortably on their back with the head slightly elevated. The area around the eyes is cleaned. A dam or ring is constructed around each eye socket using a thick, soft paste made from black gram flour or whole wheat flour. The ring must be perfectly sealed to prevent leakage.
Main Procedure: Lukewarm medicated ghee (e.g., Triphala Ghrita or Jeevantyadi Ghrita) is slowly poured into the dough reservoir, ensuring the ghee completely covers the eyeballs and eyelashes. The ghee must be precisely at body temperature or slightly warmer.
The patient is instructed to open and close their eyes repeatedly for a specified duration (which varies based on the condition), allowing the medicinal properties of the ghee to penetrate the deep ocular tissues.
The ghee is retained for a prescribed period, usually until the eyes begin to tear or a slight burning sensation occurs (the expected sign of completion).
Post-Therapy Care: After the time is complete, the ghee is carefully removed by soaking it up with cotton wool or by breaking the dough ring to drain the ghee into a basin.
The eyes are gently cleaned and covered with cotton pads for a few minutes to protect them from bright light.
The patient is advised to avoid bright light, excessive reading, screen time, and exposure to dust or wind for the rest of the day. They are also usually given a light diet.
