Ayurvedic Kesha Therapy is often a holistic protocol combining external application with internal purification and nutritional correction. The specific procedures performed externally are localized and relaxing.
Oil Application/Massage: The patient receives a vigorous yet relaxing massage using warm, medicated herbal oils (e.g., Bhringraj Taila, Neelibhringadi Taila, or Amla Taila). The oil is massaged deeply into the scalp to nourish the hair roots, stimulate blood circulation, and pacify Vata Dosha. This is often the primary external treatment.
Herbal Mask Application: A therapeutic herbal paste (Lepa) is prepared using finely powdered herbs (like Amla, Bhringraj, Hibiscus, or Neem) mixed with a medium like buttermilk, egg white, or aloe vera gel. The paste is thickly applied to the entire scalp and often left on for a specific duration (30-60 minutes) to allow the herbs to penetrate and address specific issues like scalp heat or dandruff.
Forehead Oil Flow: In cases where hair fall is linked to high stress, anxiety, or scalp heat (Pitta aggravation), the physician may include Shirodhara (continuous stream of oil/liquid over the forehead) to calm the nervous system and cool the head.
Internal Correction: The external treatments are supported by internal medications to correct digestive function (Agni) and address tissue deficiencies. This may include Triphala for cleansing, Loha Bhasma for anemia, or Brahmi for stress.
Post-Therapy Care: After the procedure (Abhyanga or Lepa), the hair is washed with a mild herbal shampoo or Snana Churna. The patient is advised to avoid chemical treatments, excessive heat styling, and stress.
