Ekanga Lepam is a simple, non-invasive procedure where the application of the herbal paste is the main focus. The treatment typically lasts between 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on the required action of the herbs.
Preparation of the Paste (Lepam): The Ayurvedic physician selects specific medicinal herbs (roots, bark, leaves, or powdered minerals) based on the condition. These herbs are finely powdered and mixed with a suitable medium (e.g., water, herbal decoction, sour buttermilk (Takra), ghee, or castor oil) to form a thick, smooth paste of a specific consistency. The medium is chosen to either enhance cooling, promote absorption, or draw out toxins.
Application (Main Procedure): The affected area is gently cleaned. The herbal paste is applied thickly (often 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick) over the entire painful or affected area, ensuring the temperature of the paste is appropriate (cool for Pitta, warm for Vata/Kapha). The paste is usually left on until it is partially or fully dry, or for the duration prescribed by the physician.
Post-Therapy Care: The dried or remaining paste is gently removed by washing the area with warm water or a suitable herbal decoction. Care is taken not to rub or irritate the skin. The patient is advised to rest the treated area and avoid exposure to cold, wind, or excessive movement immediately afterward.
