Karna Pooranam is a simple, non-invasive, and highly soothing procedure performed by a trained therapist. The treatment typically lasts between 15 to 30 minutes.
Preparation: The patient lies comfortably on one side, with the ear to be treated facing upwards. A gentle preparatory massage may be given to the area around the ear, neck, and shoulders to relax the muscles and improve circulation. The external ear canal is gently cleaned.
Main Procedure: A lukewarm, medicated oil (such as Bilva Taila, Kshara Taila, or Dhanwantharam Taila) or medicated ghee is prepared. The temperature of the oil is crucial and must be precisely maintained to be comfortably warm. The oil is slowly and gently poured into the ear canal using a dropper or spoon until the entire canal is filled. Care is taken to avoid air bubbles and sudden movements. The patient is instructed to lie still and retain the oil for a specified duration (typically 10–15 minutes). The physician monitors the patient for any signs of discomfort.
Post-Therapy Care: After the prescribed time, the patient is asked to turn to the other side, allowing the oil to drain naturally into a container or absorbent material. The ear is gently wiped clean. The process is then repeated on the other ear. The patient is advised to avoid exposure to cold air, direct wind, or loud noises immediately after the treatment. A cotton plug may be placed in the ear temporarily.
