Kati Vasti (pronounced Kut-ti Vus-ti) is a highly effective, localized therapeutic treatment in Ayurveda focused on managing chronic pain, stiffness, and degenerative issues affecting the lower back, or lumbar and sacral regions. The term is derived from ‘Kati’ meaning lower back or waist, and ‘Vasti’ meaning container or to hold. The procedure involves creating a specialized reservoir or dam over the painful area of the back using a ring of thick herbal paste (dough) and filling it with warm, medicated oil.
Kati Vasti is considered the premier treatment for addressing aggravated Vata Dosha localized in the lower spinal region. The sustained application of warm, medicated oil deeply penetrates the muscle and bone tissues, providing intense lubrication, reducing muscle spasms, and reversing degenerative changes.
