Udwarthanam is a dynamic procedure performed by one or two trained therapists under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician. The treatment typically lasts between 45 to 60 minutes.
Preparation: The physician selects the appropriate herbal powder (e.g., Triphala, Kolakulathadi Churna, or a mix of chickpea and other grains) based on the patient’s condition. The powder may be used dry or mixed into a paste with medicated oils, buttermilk, or rose water.
Main Procedure: The patient lies comfortably on a wooden Droni (massage table). The therapist applies the prepared herbal powder or paste to the entire body, or the areas requiring treatment (e.g., abdomen, thighs). The massage is performed vigorously and in a specific upward direction (moving from the extremities towards the heart), which is unique to Udwarthanam. This upward friction helps to break down fat molecules and stimulate lymphatic drainage. The deep, stimulating massage causes profuse sweating, which facilitates the removal of toxins and excess fluid.
Post-Therapy Care: After the massage, the patient is advised to take a warm shower to remove the herbal powder. Mild herbal cleansers are typically used instead of harsh soaps. A short period of rest is essential to allow the body to settle. The physician provides dietary and lifestyle guidance, often recommending light, warming foods to support the internal cleansing process.
