Udwarthanam is a dynamic procedure performed by one or two trained therapists under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician. The treatment typically lasts between 45 to 60 minutes.
Preparation of the Herbs: The physician selects the appropriate herbal powder (e.g., Triphala, Kolakulathadi Churna, or a mix of chickpea and other grains) based on the patient’s condition. The powder may be used dry or mixed into a paste with medicated oils, buttermilk, or rose water.
Application (Main Procedure):
- The patient lies comfortably on a wooden Droni (massage table).
- The therapist applies the prepared herbal powder or paste to the entire body, or the areas requiring treatment (e.g., abdomen, thighs).
- The massage is performed vigorously and in a specific upward direction (moving from the extremities towards the heart), which is unique to Udwarthanam. This upward friction helps to break down fat molecules and stimulate lymphatic drainage.
- The deep, stimulating massage causes profuse sweating, which facilitates the removal of toxins and excess fluid.
Post-Therapy Care:
- After the massage, the patient is advised to take a warm shower to remove the herbal powder. Mild herbal cleansers are typically used instead of harsh soaps.
- A short period of rest is essential to allow the body to settle. The physician provides dietary and lifestyle guidance, often recommending light, warming foods to support the internal cleansing process.
