Nasyam involves the administration of medicated oils or herbal powders through the nostrils. It is primarily used to clear blockages, balance the doshas, and promote overall health by cleansing the head and upper respiratory passages. This cleanses the sinus cavities, nasal passages, and brain, helping to eliminate toxins (ama), reduce inflammation, and restore balance to the body and mind.
The procedure is done in a calm and comfortable environment under the guidance of an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner.
Preparation: The patient is made to lie down in a relaxed position. The practitioner may use steam inhalation or gentle massage on the face to open the nasal passages.
Administration: A specially prepared herbal oil or medicated powder is gently poured into the nostrils. The patient is instructed to breathe deeply as the medicated substance works its way through the sinuses and upper respiratory system.
Post-treatment Relaxation: Rest and drink warm fluids to help cleanse the body further.
Nasyam therapy typically lasts for 20-30 minutes per session, generally performed for 5-7 consecutive days for optimal results.
