Janu Vasti (pronounced Jah-noo Vus-ti) is a specialized and localized Ayurvedic treatment for managing pain, stiffness, and degenerative changes in the knee joint. The term is derived from ‘Janu’ meaning knee joint, and ‘Vasti’ meaning container or to hold. The procedure involves creating a reservoir or dam over the knee joint using a ring of thick herbal paste (usually black gram flour) and filling this reservoir with warm, medicated oil or ghee.
Janu Vasti is exceptionally effective at pacifying aggravated Vata Dosha (the primary cause of pain and degeneration) localized in the knee joint. The warm, medicated oil penetrates the tissues, providing deep lubrication, reducing inflammation, and strengthening the surrounding structures.
