Janu Vasti therapy is an ayurvedic knee joint therapy, where warm medicated oil is retained in a dough ring around the knee. It is effective for arthritis, joint stiffness, joint pain, and cartilage degeneration.

Janu Vasti is designed to relieve knee pain and promote the health of the knee joint. It involves the application of warm, medicated oil that is retained in a dough ring placed around the knee. The heat from the oil penetrates deeply into the tissues, helping to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and relieve pain and stiffness in the knee joint. This therapy is particularly beneficial for conditions like osteoporosis etc.,
Janu Vasti is a simple, non-invasive, and highly effective localized treatment performed by a trained therapist. The procedure typically lasts between 30 to 45 minutes.
Preparation: The patient lies comfortably on their back. The affected knee joint is cleaned. A circular or ring-shaped dam is constructed over the knee cap and surrounding area using thick, warm dough made from black gram flour or whole wheat flour. The dough ring must be leak-proof and firmly fixed to the skin.
Main Procedure: The reservoir created by the dough ring is slowly filled with lukewarm medicated oil (e.g., Mahanarayana Taila, Ksheerabala Taila, or Dhanwantharam Taila). The oil temperature is carefully maintained to ensure patient comfort and optimal penetration. The oil is kept on the joint for a specified duration (typically 20-30 minutes). During the procedure, the therapist continuously monitors the oil temperature and replenishes or reheats the oil to maintain a consistent therapeutic warmth, allowing the medicinal properties to permeate the joint structures.
Post-Therapy Care: After the prescribed time, the oil is removed from the reservoir, and the dough ring is taken off. A gentle, localized massage is given to the knee area to help the remaining oil penetrate deeper. The patient is advised to rest the joint and avoid strenuous activity immediately after the treatment.

Janu Vasti is a singular, localized therapeutic technique. However, the treatment is customized primarily based on the nature of the medicated substance used within the dam:
Taila Vasti (Oil-based): This is the most common form, using different types of warm medicated herbal oils. It is primarily used for Vata-dominant conditions, pain, and degeneration (like osteoarthritis).
Ghruta Vasti (Ghee-based): Medicated ghee is used in the reservoir. This is often preferred for Pitta-dominant conditions where there is burning, or to provide deep nourishment to dry tissues.
Kashaya Vasti (Decoction-based): In rare cases of severe inflammation or swelling (Kapha/Ama dominant), a lukewarm herbal decoction may be used, though this is less common than oil Vasti.
Each session typically lasts for 30 to 45 minutes. For optimal results, the therapy is usually performed for 5 to 7 consecutive days, depending on the severity of the condition.
Janu Vasti is a focused and highly effective remedy for chronic and acute knee problems.
