Kukkutanda Swedam is performed by one or two trained therapists working in synchronization. The procedure typically lasts between 30 to 45 minutes.
Preparation of the Bolus (Kizhi): The yolk and albumen (inner contents) of a hen’s egg are mixed with finely powdered medicinal herbs (such as Aswagandha or Shatavari) and often a portion of medicated oil or rock salt. This semi-liquid mixture is cooked slightly to form a paste and then securely tied into several small to medium-sized muslin cloth bags (Kizhi).
Preparatory Massage: The affected area, or the entire body, is first massaged gently with warm medicated oil to prepare the tissues and facilitate the absorption of the bolus contents.
Application (Main Procedure): The prepared boluses (Kizhi) are continuously warmed by keeping them dipped in warm medicated oil or a specific herbal decoction. The therapists apply the warm boluses to the affected area or the entire body, performing rhythmic pressing, patting, and circular movements. The movement is often vigorous yet controlled, applying firm pressure. The heat from the boluses causes localized sweating, and the nourishing contents of the egg and herbs penetrate the skin, providing deep thermal and nutritional therapy.
Post-Therapy Care: After the prescribed duration, the remnants of the paste are gently wiped off. The patient is advised to take a warm shower using an herbal cleansing powder. A mandatory period of rest is crucial to allow the deep therapeutic effect to settle in and prevent exposure to cold or wind.
