Nasya therapy

(Nasal therapy)

Nasya, a vital therapy within Ayurveda’s Panchakarma, is the therapeutic administration of medicated oils, herbal juices, or powders through the nasal passages. The nose is considered the gateway to the head (Shira) in Ayurveda, and Nasya therapy directly targets the head, neck, and upper respiratory tract. By cleansing and lubricating these passages, Nasya helps balance the three doshas, particularly Kapha Dosha and Vata Dosha, which can accumulate in the head region. This treatment is highly effective for conditions affecting the senses and organs above the collarbone.

How Nasyam treatment works - Shree Ayurvedic Multispeciality Hospital, Chennai

How Nasya therapy Works?

Nasyam involves the administration of medicated oils or herbal powders through the nostrils. It is primarily used to clear blockages, balance the doshas, and promote overall health by cleansing the head and upper respiratory passages. This cleanses the sinus cavities, nasal passages, and brain, helping to eliminate toxins (ama), reduce inflammation, and restore balance to the body and mind.

Nasya therapy Procedure

The Nasya procedure is a precise and gentle process performed by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. It is divided into three main parts:

Preparation: The patient lies down with their head slightly tilted back. The face, neck, and shoulders are gently massaged with a medicated oil to soften the tissues and facilitate the flow of the medicine. A gentle fomentation (steam or warm towel application) is then given to these areas to open up the channels and sinuses.

Main Process: The medicated oil or preparation, which is warmed to a comfortable temperature, is administered drop by drop into each nostril. The patient is instructed to inhale gently to draw the medicine in. The therapist may gently massage the forehead, cheeks, and sides of the nose to help the medicine penetrate the deeper sinuses. The patient is encouraged to spit out any phlegm or mucus that drains into the throat.

Post-treatment Care: The patient rests for a few minutes in the same position. Gargling with warm water is recommended to clear any residual medicine or mucus from the throat. Light, easily digestible food is advised for the rest of the day.

Types of Nasya therapy

Nasya is a versatile therapy with several classifications based on its therapeutic action and the speed of the drug’s effect. The physician customizes the type of Nasya according to the patient’s constitution and the specific ailment.

1. Based on Therapeutic Action:

  1. Virechana Nasya: This type uses strong, sharp herbs or powders to induce a powerful cleansing action, expelling accumulated Kapha from the sinuses and head. It’s often used for chronic sinusitis and severe headaches.
  2. Brumhana Nasya: Rich, unctuous substances like medicated ghee, milk, or sesame oil are administered to nourish and strengthen the head and neck region. This is suitable for Vata-related conditions like migraines, dry sinuses, and degenerative diseases.
  3. Shamana Nasya: This type uses less potent preparations to pacify aggravated doshas and is a gentle, regular therapy for minor issues like allergies, nasal congestion, or general well-being.

2. Based on the Speed of Drug Effect:

  1. Pratimarsha Nasya: A mild, lubricating Nasya that involves the administration of just a few drops of medicated oil (usually sesame or medicated) and can be done daily. It is excellent for preventative care and daily cleansing.
  2. Navana Nasya: A more intensive, traditional Nasya procedure that involves a higher dose of medicated oil and is performed less frequently. It is the most common form of Nasya used for therapeutic purposes.
  3. Avapida Nasya: A forceful and rapid form of Nasya where freshly squeezed juice from medicinal plants is administered. This is a very potent method used in specific, severe conditions.
  4. Dhuma Nasya: This technique involves inhaling medicated fumes from burning herbs. It is used for respiratory conditions and to dry up excess mucus.

I’ve been seeing doctors for the past 10 years, dealing with everything from a simple cold to more serious stuff like shoulder tendonitis, which required an injection. Wanting to avoid ongoing treatments, I turned to Ayurveda. Since then, my shoulders are back to feeling as good as new. Later on, I also got treated for ulcerative colitis and it’s all gone now. It’s amazing—every issue I’ve had has been fixed without any long-term problems.
